EBN Highlight: Cold houses and their impact on mental health

This EBN within the highlight presents our recent podcast (Here) with Dr Kimberley O’Sullivan (Senior Research Fellow, University of Otago) and Dr Ben Parkinson (Deputy Editor, EBN). Kimberly is an authority in the sphere of fuel poverty and health and has published extensively on this topic (Here). This podcast is an amazing opportunity to listen to Kimberly share her knowledge concerning the public health implications of housing and mental health.

Within the podcast, Kimberley and Ben highlight the importance of housing and the impact that cold housing and fuel poverty can have on mental health. The podcast focuses on “Lack of funds for adequate home heating is related to an increased risk of great mental disorders‘(1) which is an EBN commentary published by Kimberley (Here). The commentary and this podcast discuss essential research (2) using data from the UK Household Survey to analyze the impact of cold houses on mental health.

Within the podcast, Kimberley and Ben proceed to discuss poor housing and mental health. Kimberly would really like to emphasise the importance of ensuring individuals are supported to live in warm homes to avoid social, economic and psychological harm. Kimberly also provides interesting insights from her own research on the subject and raises awareness of different strategies and approaches that could be used to assist people in inappropriate living environments. One area of ​​interest is to listen to what Kimberley says concerning the role of nurses and what nurses can do to assist people living in fuel poverty or in cold homes. Kimberley would also like to spotlight that more research is required to raised understand the links between cold housing and an increased risk of mental health problems.
