Global Fund approves emergency TB financing for conflict-affected Sudan

March 27, 2026

– The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the “Global Fund”) has approved USD 1,607,729 in emergency funding to support urgent TB diagnosis and treatment for internally displaced individuals (IDPs) and host communities in Sudan until December 31, 2026. This funding can be implemented through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in cooperation with the National Program Tuberculosis Federal Ministry of Health and native organizations.

The escalation of the conflict has pushed Sudan into some of the serious humanitarian crises on the planet. The variety of internally displaced people in Sudan is currently estimated at 11.75 million, making it the country with the most important internally displaced population on the planet. Conflict-induced displacement has sharply worsened living conditions and access to care across the country, increasing overcrowding, malnutrition and treatment interruptions – all of which increase the chance of TB transmission and drug resistance.

Tuberculosis is the deadliest infectious disease on the planet. Diagnosis and treatment are essential to stop an outbreak. One person with untreated TB can spread the disease to 15-20 additional people in a yr.

“Part of our mission is to provide rapid access to tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment for communities devastated by conflict,” he said. “Working with national authorities, local organizations and international partners, we are prioritizing continuity of care and community-centred services to prevent further transmission of the virus and protect the most vulnerable people.”

This emergency response focuses on IDPs and surrounding communities in 10 currently more stable states receiving a big influx of individuals from the states of Darfur and Kordofan: Al Jazirah, Gedaref, Kassala, Khartoum, North (Addabah), North Kordofan, Red Sea, Nile, Sennar and White Nile. Support for fragile states will proceed under the present TB grant, launched in 2023.

The response will make sure the continued detection and treatment of TB cases by purchasing the vital anti-TB diagnostics and medicines (including GeneXpert cartridges and first- and second-line drugs); scaling early contact tracing, energetic screening, rapid diagnosis and rapid initiation of treatment; and repair delivery through mobile primary care units, community care units and established TB treatment units.

Established in 2014, the Global Fund’s Emergency Fund provides rapid and versatile emergency funding to make sure the continuity of existing HIV, TB and malaria programs and services.

Between 2014 and December 2024, the Global Fund provided greater than $149 million through the Emergency Fund to countries facing conflict, environmental breakdown, and other acute crises.
