Nurses call for motion

I attempt to limit watching events in Newtown, Connecticut on television. I feel guilty about this because those directly affected by the terrible massacre that took place on December 14 need to cope with tragedy every minute of every single day. Like you, I’m experiencing all types of feelings of sadness and anxiety, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and first responders.

However, I do not limit myself to reading. I feel that by reading the stories of members of the family, I get to know the victims and, to some extent, honor them. I read survivors’ stories and feel that in a roundabout way I’m helping them process the events by “listening.” I read thoughts and feelings about how others are processing what has happened, hoping to contribute to the discussion and permit our voices to be heard in order that changes might be made that can make our nation a stronger and safer place for us and our youngsters.

Now I turn to feelings: “How can I help?” and what can I do?” I encourage you to read the entries of our colleagues on AJN off the charts AND Cielgnitopia for a list of resources and ways to help. Additionally, the American Nurses Association has compiled a listing of greater than 30 nursing organizations which can be joining forces to call for change.

Nurses – we’re the biggest group of health care employees. We see the devastation brought on by weapons and violence. We take care of mentally ailing patients and we all know there may be a necessity to enhance services and access to treatment. It’s time to take motion.
