We all have interesting stories to inform about our nursing journey. I recently spoke with Dr. Angela Patterson, nurse manager at CVS MinuteClinic and vice chairman of CVS Health. Dr. Patterson knew from an early age that she desired to turn out to be a nurse. Her profession has evolved through the years from medical/surgical nursing, to later practicing as a nurse in a family practice and co-owner of a family medical practice, to her current role at CVS, in addition to chairing the board of a highschool for underprivileged highschool students who want to review nursing. Wow!
Dr. Patterson has great advice for nurses to get entangled in board membership. Describes resources akin to Coalition of Nurses on Management Boards, Sigma Theta Tau International Honorary Nursing Society and The way forward for nursing: A campaign for motion. It also reminds us that as nurses we’ve the innate skills, qualities and qualities vital for board membership:
- Nurses have first-hand knowledge of the views and concerns of patients and their families.
- Nurses know tips on how to provide top quality care.
- Nurses can offer progressive solutions to enhance safety and quality.
- Nurses understand the necessity for collaboration between different professions and environments.
- Nurses are great listeners and ask questions to raised understand.
- Nurses respect a wide selection of job roles and skills, which helps us work as effective team members.
By planning, being intentional, in search of continuing education, remaining passionate and networking, we are able to higher prepare for board membership. As guardians of our patients’ stories, we will need to have a seat on the table. Please take heed to our entire conversation Here.
I hope you enjoyed this conversation – thanks, Dr. Patterson!
