Ukraine: Life-saving care despite war – stories

Ukraine’s healthcare system was devastated by the war – hundreds of hospitals and clinics were damaged or destroyed, supply chains were decimated, and thousands and thousands of individuals were susceptible to being cut off from life-saving HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and first healthcare.

Despite these monumental challenges, mobile health teams operated by the Alliance for Public Health, with support from the Global Fund and other donors, are delivering lifesaving care to hardest-hit communities that might otherwise don’t have any access to health services.

Mobile teams, typically consisting of 10 medical staff and support staff, operate in convoys of white vans equipped with a solid set of cutting-edge medical tools and modern equipment. The teams provide on-site consultations, in addition to diagnosis and treatment for a variety of communicable and non-communicable diseases, including HIV, tuberculosis, heart disease and other conditions.

Despite limited infrastructure and the specter of energetic war, teams reach communities cut off from all other health services, providing them with care and infrequently the one line of defense against the spread of infectious diseases.

Between December 2022 and December 2025, Alliance for Public Health mobile clinics accomplished 799 missions, reaching nearly 29,400 people in 452 communities.

Working with the Global Fund’s three important beneficiaries – the Ministry of Health’s Public Health Center, 100% Life and the Alliance for Public Health – and over 80 local and community-led organizations, the Global Fund will invest USD 158 million from 2024 to 2026 to deliver critical HIV and TB services and strengthen health systems in Ukraine.
