Turn passion into motion: a practice and training center run by a nurse-psychotherapist

Stacey Roles, RN, MScN, PhD has a singular story. She took her passion for mental health care and developed an organization that gives training to health care providers and improves the delivery of health care services. Her story provides insight into nurses’ potential to create meaningful change.

Stacey Roles was born and raised in Northern Ontario, Canada. She trained and worked as a registered nurse, quickly becoming captivated with mental health care, where she noticed an enormous gap in services for people affected by mental health problems. She sought additional education and qualifications that will prepare her for advanced clinical care. At the identical time, she developed a business whose goal was not only to expand psychotherapy services within the northern regions of Ontario, but in addition to coach other health care professionals. Stacey has taken the specialty of psychiatry and mental health to a brand new level, empowering others who’re captivated with helping to achieve the education and clinical skills to raised treat clients using effective psychotherapeutic techniques. Currently, as owner and director of Roles & Associates Psychotherapy Services Inc., Stacey leads a team of 15 performers and lots of students from across Ontario; with stationary offices in three locations within the north of the voivodeship and virtual offices offering services in other cities. Team members include nurses, social staff, community service staff, occupational therapists and psychotherapists to satisfy the needs of the communities they serve. Stacey can reach healthcare professionals across Canada and the United States by sharing her knowledge and experience through training, supervision and workshops.

In the early stages of growing her company, Stacey decided to pursue a PhD to pursue research in her field. Her doctoral studies focused on the standard of lifetime of individuals with borderline personality disorder. The study clearly demonstrated the necessity to develop cross-professional and cross-sectoral strategies to handle the care of individuals with complex mental health problems.

From this study, she learned about several features of the services offered to mental health clients in Ontario. Stacey could be very committed to meeting the client’s needs. It quickly offered free virtual counseling to health care staff in the course of the pandemic. It also offers a sliding scale of counseling for clients who cannot afford the complete cost of its services or who don’t have insurance for them.

Stacey has created an organization that exudes a culture of empathy and inclusion. It provides a way of community to all members, offering supervision and inspiring consultation between specialists and folks with different therapeutic experience. As a result, the Roles & Associates team has a singular ability to collaborate to change into more socially and culturally responsive, and consistently updates the collective knowledge of current best practices and research in cognitive behavioral therapy and other research-based therapies. All members of the Roles & Associates team share the common goal of using research-based methods and a holistic approach to make positive changes within the lives of their clients.

As a trainer and supervisor, in addition to a practicing psychotherapist, Stacey guides all professionals working in her practice in continuing education through her CBT training center and other organizations, recruiting affiliated psychotherapists who’re highly knowledgeable and in a position to help clients with almost any condition mental health struggle. Stacey also encourages individuals with specialist training to share their knowledge more widely, offering colleagues the chance to run workshops inside her organisation. These workshops are designed to show counseling techniques or skills in specific modalities or areas, akin to psychotherapy, workplace well-being, healthcare charting, Socratic dialogue, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), policy or staff development processes, and for specific groups demographics akin to youth, 2SLGBTQ+, people combating, amongst others, with mourning. These sessions will be tailored to the needs of practitioners, organizations, clients, most of the people or students.

Stacey Roles has demonstrated the potential of a nurse’s knowledge and skills to drive meaningful change within the health care system. She exemplifies the clinical and leadership skills of experienced nurses and has made an actual difference to the lives of individuals affected by mental health problems.
