To those affected by Hurricane Sandy…

Published

What can I say? I’m still in shock on the devastation brought on by this hurricane.

I grew up on Long Island. My parents, my brother and his family, and lots of childhood friends still live there. Yes, they’ve experienced the lack of “stuff” and are left without power, but everyone seems to be protected. When stories of lack of life come to light, I understand how lucky we’re.

The reports of hospitals closing and patients being evacuated are astonishing. I’m in awe of those that have worked so hard, and proceed to work so hard, to maintain patients protected and supply care to those each out and in of hospital. Patient evacuation and transfer, esp NICU babies at NYU Langone Medical Center, is unbelievable to me. As a mother of two NICU graduates, I remember well the challenges of getting to reposition a sick premature baby in an isolation ward; I am unable to imagine navigating New York during a hurricane. What more can I say apart from THANK YOU to our fellow nurses and other healthcare employees who completed this amazing feat.

To those scuffling with loss: I do not think you may ever see this post. If by any likelihood you come across this text sooner or later, please know that my thoughts and prayers proceed to be with you right now. I hope you will have rebuilt your house, whether in the identical place or elsewhere, and that you will have received comfort and support in your grief.
