The Nurse Who Moved: Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles
While we might have been extremely excited and honored to interview this innovator within the nursing industry, unfortunately Styles passed away in 2005 after a protracted, successful life and profession. We thought we might customize our “Nurse on the Move” blog to focus on a few of the most effective “Nurses Who Moved” that actually shaped the career.
Life and education
Styles was born in Pennsylvania in 1930. She was married to Reverend Douglas Styles for 47 years. The couple had three children.
Styles attended Juanita College and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry. She then attended Yale University for a master’s degree in nursing after which the University of Florida, where she earned a doctorate in education.
Nursing educator, writer and innovator
Styles began teaching as an associate professor in 1967 at Duke University and went on to turn into dean of nursing at various universities, including the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, Wayne State University in Detroit and the University of California at San Antonio. Styles campaigned and advocated for more stringent certification requirements and qualification standards for nurses. She wrote extensively on the subject and later helped found the American Nurse Certification Center (ANCC). Her influence in improving the nursing career within the U.S. prolonged internationally, and for a time, Styles also served as president of the International Council of Nurses.
While her legacy will all the time be tied to the role she played in founding ANCC, her impact on the nursing career continues to be widespread. She is commonly quoted and mentioned in medical publications, and lots of awards and scholarships are named after her. Styles was also inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame.
And in fact, members of the career will proceed to honor Styles’ work and achievements on her birthday, March 19, on Certified Nurses Day.
