The Netherlands reaffirms its commitment to global health
November 19, 2025
– The Government of the Netherlands is donating EUR 195.2 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for 2026-2029. This commitment reaffirms the Netherlands’ strong commitment to global health and multilateral cooperation.
“At a time when the world faces converging health threats, continued investment in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria not only saves lives, but is essential to building resilient, equitable health systems,” said Peter Sands, executive director of the Global Fund. “We are deeply grateful for the continued leadership and example of the Netherlands.”
“With this contribution, the Netherlands confirms its lasting commitment to the Global Fund,” says Aukje de Vries, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development. The Fund plays a key role in ensuring that effective and progressive health solutions reach everyone who needs them, including vulnerable people. Access for all must remain at the center of our mission.”
The Netherlands: a committed partner in global health
The Netherlands’ renewed commitment reflects its long-standing commitment to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and cross-border health threats more generally. According to The Dutch Global Health Strategythis commitment will enable the Global Fund to proceed to support countries’ efforts to strengthen health systems and make essential primary health care services available to all. The renewed commitment signals the Netherlands’ confidence that the Global Fund will help shape a more coherent and efficient global health architecture that prioritizes country leadership, sustains progress and, over time, reduces reliance on external donor resources.
With support from the Netherlands and other partners, the Global Fund partnership has saved 70 million lives over the past 20 years and reduced the combined death rate from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 63%.
Eighth replenishment of the Global Fund
With this contribution, the Netherlands joins Australia, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, Uganda and the United Kingdom, in addition to several private sector partners who’ve already committed to the eighth replenishment of the Global Fund. As the sixth EU member state to come back forward with the initiative, the Netherlands’ commitment reinforces the growing momentum of European donors to fight the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. The Eighth Replenishment Global Fund campaign launched in February 2025 under the leadership of co-hosts South Africa and the United Kingdom. The resupply summit will likely be held on November 21 on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg.
Making a pledge early is vital to constructing trust and inspiring other donors to take motion. They help catalyze additional commitments and be certain that the Global Fund can plan effectively to deliver maximum impact.
With the successful completion of the partnership, the Global Fund could help save as much as 23 million lives between 2027 and 2029 and reduce mortality rates from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 64% by 2029 in comparison with 2023 levels, while strengthening health systems and communities to combat latest epidemics and speed up pathways to self-reliance.
