I recently had the chance to hearken to a presentation by Dr. Jean Watson on the occasion of Nurses Week. In Dr. Watson’s Theory of Human Care/Science of Care, there are fundamental principles that we as nurses must give attention to to supply the most effective take care of our patients.

Basic principles include:

  • Practice loving-kindness
  • Have an authentic presence (enable deep faith in others)
  • Develop your spiritual practice towards wholeness of mind/body/spirit
  • Be a caring and healing environment
  • Be open to unexpected and unexplainable life events

At Caring Science, we nurses need just as much knowledge as we do at . When we put care into science, we offer the most effective take care of our patients.

Dr. Watson believes it is amazingly necessary that we “stop caring”! Before any patient interaction, give attention to the compassion you have to provide not only to your patients, but additionally to yourself. In the busy day and era we live in, this could be very necessary! Remember that one and all must be heard, seen, known that they’re necessary and should be touched. Look at your patients beyond the physical disease process and truly apply the principle of patient care. Being present with patients can also be necessary.

There are 4 million nurses within the U.S. (and counting), and we now have the chance to make a difference – one patient at a time! As Dr. Watson stated, “Nursing offers the world what the world needs – human care and peace!

Dr. Watson explained that nursing is a spiritual practice and calling. The transpersonal caring relationship connects us to a spiritual level that permits us to supply healing to patients. We must connect mind, body and spirit for healing to penetrate our patients.

We have come a good distance since Florence Nightingale, but we still have many more opportunities to supply exceptional care to the patients we serve daily. Therefore, strive to repeatedly improve the care of your patients in order that they’ve the most effective possible opportunity to heal and recuperate.
