Spreading details about solar safety
Over the past yr, my eyes have truly opened. Since founding the Skin Care Network in partnership with the Dermatology Nurses Association and becoming a member of the editorial board, I even have learned A LOT about skin cancer, indoor tanning, and prevention. I even have written about skin cancer on this blog before, not a lot concerning the cancer itself, but about my involvement (or lack thereof) in caring for my dad when he underwent Moh’s surgery (Is nursing really for me?). , mainly to share that I even have a family history of skin cancer, I should and shall be more proactive in using preventative methods for myself and my family.
The latest publications indicating the increasing incidence of melanoma and its relationship with the usage of solariums include, amongst others: Rising incidence of melanoma amongst young adults Solarium use and skin cancer incidenceAND Melanoma surveillance within the United States: a review of methods Many states have enacted or are considering restrictions on tanning beds for teens (that is nice list) and A Congress Report exposed “false and misleading health information being given to teenagers by the indoor tanning industry.”
I do know there are lots of links to review above, however the variety of reports and articles (and there are more) show how serious this problem is. The bottom line is that there are methods to forestall or minimize skin cancer, resources to coach our patients and the general public, and vital information it is advisable know to acknowledge and treat skin cancer early. The following organizations and events are an excellent place to begin!
National Skin Cancer Prevention Council
Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation
Melanoma Monday ~ first Monday in May; the goal is to boost awareness of melanoma and encourage early detection.
A day of no frying ~ Friday before Memorial Day; The aim is to boost awareness of sun safety and remind everyone to guard their skin when spending time outdoors.
