Nurses’ essential skills: skills which can be anything but ‘soft’
To achieve success as nurses, there isn’t a doubt that we’d like specialized skills to perform clinical tasks. These are sometimes called “hard skills” – things we learn through our education schemes and on-the-job training. They are measurable and we’re tested on these competencies each at college and within the workplace. But how essential are skills corresponding to teamwork, communication and work ethic? Often called “soft” skills, it is vital that we realize that these skills are anything but soft. These skills are equally – and sometimes much more – crucial to our skilled success.
A greater word to explain these skills could be: Let’s look back on the previous blog post and ask some thought-provoking questions on why these skills are there and in no way.
Ten essential skills for nurses
1. Communication
2. Posture and self-confidence
3. Teamwork
4. Networking
5. Critical considering and inventive problem solving
6. Professionalism
7. Empathy
8. Resolving conflicts
9. Adaptability
10. Initiative and robust work ethic
These essential skills can have a big impact on patients and colleagues, in addition to on our own well-being and satisfaction. They are difficult to learn and require practice. What other essential skills would you add to this list?
