Question:
Dear Donna,
My 16-year-old daughter is excited about a nursing profession. Her long-term goal is to grow to be a nurse. Her short-term goal for the following few years is to acquire a certificate to work in a hospital. What nursing opportunities/classes/programs can she complete now to higher prepare for her future and secure a part-time hospital job?
Kathy
Dear Donna replies:
Dear Kathy,
I’d suggest that your daughter grow to be an authorized nursing aide (CNA) now. As soon as she obtains this certificate, she’s going to have the option to work within the hospital. She may even have the option to proceed working as a CNA in nursing school. This will give her an excellent start and make her a greater nurse in the long term.
To find programs in your area, contact your state board of nursing (https://www.ncsbn.org/515.htm), state hospital association (search online for ?[your state] hospital association?) or search online for “Certified Nurse Assistance Courses.” [your state and/or county].? Your daughter’s school counselor may even have the option to assist you with this. Some schools offer health care profession programs or sponsor Health Occupations Students of America chapters.
Best wishes to you each!
