Just a nurse with my doctor’s stethoscope
It’s been a busy few days within the nursing community – first with Miss Colorado’s touching speech, Kelley Johnson’s moving monologue about being a nurse, after which some uneducated comments on celebrity talk shows.
I used to be very impressed by Miss Johnson’s monologue during her talent portion of the Miss America pageant. She cultivates talent, in addition to storytelling, which she did thoroughly within the competition. Mrs. Johnson shared the story of her relationship with the patient and what she learned from one another. She taught him that he was not an Alzheimer’s patient, and he taught her that she was not a nurse.
Often times, we nurses are hard on ourselves! We use phrases like “just a nurse” regardless that we understand how necessary our role is. Although I cringed once I first heard her use those words, I used to be relieved to know what she was talking about. Look…
In a discussion concerning the Miss America pageant, “The View” panel made several derogatory remarks about Miss Johnson’s monologue, saying he “basically reads her emails,” calling them “basically hilarious,” and asking, “Why does she must a medical stethoscope?” Wow – this hurt me at first, after which it really made me offended. And I’m not the just one! I spent most of this evening reading posts and comments in support of Miss Johnson’s monologue, and I actually just like the latest hashtags (#nursingismytalent, #nursematter, and #respectnurses, for instance). several), in addition to selfies that nurses post with stethoscopes
The point has been emphasized – we’re nurses and we’re pleased with it! Share your passion and educate others concerning the work we do and the difference we make!
