Improving the Healthcare Landscape One Ortho Nurse at a Time

Every 12 months on October 30, orthopedic nurses around the globe have fun International Orthopedic Nurse Day. The tradition began within the United States Senate with a proclamation presented by Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) in 1990 to then-President George H. W. Bush.

The National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization that improves the lives and careers of orthopedic nurses. Founded in 1980, NAON aimed to advertise the best standards of nursing practice by educating practitioners, promoting research, and inspiring effective communication between orthopedic nurses and other like-minded groups.

As President-Elect of NAON, I’m proud to announce organizational membership to roughly 6,000 RNs, LPNs, LVNs, student nurses, and associate members from across the country and around the globe who share an interest in musculoskeletal health care. In short, orthopedic nurses – commonly called “orthodontic nurses” – are wherever a patient receives look after musculoskeletal conditions.

Ortho nurses are:

  • He practices as educators, managers, researchers, advanced practitioners and administrators
  • Navigating your entire continuum of care in clinics, offices, hospitals, surgical centers, schools, rehabilitation centers and at home.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary teams with physicians, physiotherapists, case managers and other colleagues
  • Care for patients and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days every week
  • Providing care in specialist areas resembling the operating room, post-anesthesia care, intensive care, pain management, infection control, medical surgical and outpatient care
  • Caring for patients of all ages, from newborns to pediatrics and adolescents to geriatrics
