Global Fund Helps Digitize Healthcare Supply Chain in Indonesia – Updates
The global fund helps support the digitization of the healthcare supply chain in Indonesia

– On October 15, 2024, Indonesia launched a key element of its SATUSEHAT Logistics Digital Supply Chain Framework: SMILE e-LMIS, a newly developed electronic logistics management information system (e-LMIS).
This initiative marks a milestone within the transformation of the nation’s healthcare supply chain, ensuring that life-saving medicines and supplies efficiently reach those in need.
SMILE e-LMIS, a collaboration between the Indonesian Ministry of Health, UNDP, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the “Global Fund”), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and other donors, guarantees to modernize the provision chain, creating more efficient and transparent processes. This system is especially necessary to make sure the provision of essential health products, contributing to raised health care outcomes.
The SMILE system, which began with monitoring vaccine distribution and supplies as a part of the national immunization program, has expanded to other essential health products. The system has distributed and registered over 180 million units of health products, including life-saving medicines for HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.
Pak Budi Gunadi, Minister of Health of Indonesia, praised SMILE as a transformational tool to enhance logistics and inventory management in Indonesian healthcare facilities, thereby eliminating existing inefficiencies within the distribution of medical supplies. He highlighted the important thing role of donor-funded programs, reminiscent of those supported by the Global Fund, in ensuring the implementation of such digital solutions.
The Global Fund has played a key role in supporting Indonesia’s drive for stronger health systems, investing greater than $1 billion within the country since 2004. These investments focused totally on fighting HIV, tuberculosis and malaria and strengthening resilient and sustainable health systems. health.
In November 2023, due to investments under the Covid-19 Response Mechanism and in step with the strategic shift towards constructing resilient and sustainable health product management systems, the Global Fund approved USD 9 million in financing to reinforce and expand the e-LMIS as much as 10,000 health care facilities in 38 voivodeships by the tip of 2025.
The Global Fund’s commitment stays unwavering because it has provided significant funding to support the Government of Indonesia as a part of its digital transformation strategy, including supporting the combination and interoperability of its extensive network of health information systems.
SMILE has the potential to turn out to be a central pillar of pandemic preparedness and response, providing visibility into life-saving health products – including data on demand, supplies and availability – a subject that resonates strongly within the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Global Fund’s contribution to strengthening Indonesia’s response to the pandemic through investments in medical oxygen, genome sequencing and the SMILE platform further strengthens its role as a key partner in transforming the country’s healthcare system.
This achievement also demonstrates the ability of multi-stakeholder partnerships and the importance of investing in digital health innovation to enhance healthcare delivery for all.
