For CRNA Week – Interview with Jessica Emmons, MSN, CRNA [Podcast]

I had the pleasure of speaking with Jessica Emmons, a recent graduate of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) program, who, like lots of us, has quite an interesting story to inform about her path to nursing and her final stop in her profession as a nurse anesthetist. Jessica began her adult life as an accountant, and when she was searching for a change, other health care professionals described nursing as “an enviable world.”

During her 12 years as an emergency room nurse, Jessica also worked as a vascular access nurse, where she experienced significant autonomy and decision-making responsibility. As she developed her leadership skills and so they were searching for individuals with more responsibility, she realized it was necessary for her to remain on the bedside. She shadowed a colleague within the operating room and had a “great experience” that led her to develop into a CRNA.

Please take heed to our conversation to learn more about Jessica, including the human aspect of her job as a CRNA, what a typical day is like, and what she means when she says, “You never hear of an overprepared or overly clean nurse on the show “. News at 5pm!” Jessica also tells us in regards to the importance of trusting a patient in her care and offers an example of providing care to a patient who was not expected to get up after surgery. Finally, Jessica has great advice for anyone considering applying to the CRNA program and joining the group of over 52,000 advanced practice nurses!

Happy National CRNA Week!
