Feeding now: the first 6 months

About six months have passed because the official launch of Nursing Now, a world collaborative campaign between the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Nursing Now’s vision is to “improve global health by raising the profile and status of nurses everywhere.”1 In the short time since its inception, Nursing Now has gained enormous impact around the globe with programs and partnerships in countries reminiscent of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Israel, Turkey, Qatar, China, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Brazil, Jamaica, Mexico , Germany, France, Great Britain, Canada and the United States.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) reminiscent of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung diseases cause almost 70% of all deaths worldwide. Although the treatment of non-communicable diseases is now the main focus of many Nursing Now programs, communicable diseases reminiscent of HIV and AIDS proceed to pose a major public health challenge, especially in resource-limited countries. According to WHO, in 2017, 36.9 million people were infected with HIV, of which 1.8 million were newly infected and 940,000 died of HIV-related causes.3 The African region has the very best percentage of individuals infected with HIV – 25.7 million, which is greater than two-thirds of the whole number of individuals worldwide.3 In 2017, only 59% of all people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART).3 Health care professionals should have the most recent information to enhance HIV prevention, treatment and support services for all people living with HIV and/or AIDS.

In July 2018 AIDS Care Nurses Associationalong with national HIV nurse associations within the UK and the Netherlands, have joined the Nursing Now campaign, which goals to “raise awareness of the role of nurses in global health and support people living with HIV in long-term management”. Wolters Kluwer Health will launch in January 2019. This cutting-edge, international journal is peer-reviewed and provides the most recent information on HIV/AIDS prevention, evidence-based care management, interprofessional clinical care, research, advocacy, policy, education, epidemiology, and program development. Through this partnership, Wolters Kluwer will publish the magazine in its Lippincott portfolio, expanding its reach to a wider audience.

Through partnerships like this, nursing’s impact will proceed to grow. As a career, we should always proceed to strive to create change on the local level to affect healthcare on a world scale.
