Dear Nursing Graduate…
Dear Mr. Nursing Graduate,
Welcome! What an exciting time for you! I realize that this might be also an emotional and stressful time. My sons just “graduated” from elementary school and with all of the events and ceremonies, I used to be reminded how special these milestones and traditions may be. I suppose the most important one for me was graduating from nursing school and entering the “real world.”
First, let’s eliminate all of the stress you are probably feeling without delay. These were my 3 fundamental sources of hysteria if I remember appropriately…
. I discovered other mentors and formed one other support network pretty quickly, and you may too! Meet other latest nurses during orientation. Be open to learning from more experienced nurses and other staff.
How could I do know all the pieces that was expected of me? I did it and so are you able to (but don’t stop learning!)
I needed to be persistent and open to options that weren’t my first alternative. Remember that each job generally is a stepping stone to your dream job.
I remember hearing over and once more how the “real world” of nursing could be so different from nursing school. How to make the transition easier? Here are some suggestions:
- Learn from other nurses, other disciplines, support staff and everybody around you! I learned a few of my most vital communication skills and techniques from my first teacher, a nursing assistant who had been on the unit for over 20 years! Take advantage of the knowledge and experience of individuals near you. Really hearken to advice and watch what others do and say. You may not need to imitate all the pieces you see, but you’ll be able to learn from it.
- I do know you simply graduated, but there’s still so much to learn and things are always changing in healthcare. Participate in services and meet continuing education requirements. Additionally, when the time comes, consider becoming certified in your specialty and consider returning to highschool.
- This goes hand in hand with learning and education. Chances are, if you’ve a matter, another person is wondering the identical thing. Don’t assume – get the reply or discover the best way to get it. Then share it with others.
- It’s an excellent method to stay awake thus far and connect with nurses with similar interests.
- Remember to take breaks while working. Also remember to enjoy “non-health care” time with family and friends. One of my favorite beauty suggestions reads: “Nursing is a 24/7 job that requires teamwork. Try to prioritize, work safely, and pass the rest on to others.”
The final piece of recommendation is: remember concerning the feeling of uncertainty and stress, irrespective of how uncomfortable it’s. This will assist you to when students or latest nurses arrive in your floor. Welcome them and treat them with respect. Share your knowledge with them and even change into a teacher. They will thanks for it.
I wish you good luck with this transition!
